About the Lighting Research Center

  The Lighting Research Center (LRC) is    part of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute    of Troy, N.Y., and is the leading    university-based research center    devoted to lighting. The LRC offers the    world's premier graduate education in    lighting, including one- and two-year    master's programs and a Ph.D.    program. Since 1988 the LRC has built    an international reputation as a reliable    source for objective information about    lighting technologies, applications, and    products.             Yukio Akashi, Ph.D.
        Education:
       B.S., engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan; M.S., Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan;     Ph.D., engineering, Musashi Institute of Technology, Japan.

        Research interests:
       Energy-efficient office lighting, transportation lighting, light pollution, light and health, energy-savings policies in lighting,      ballast performance testing.

        Background:
       Prior to joining the Lighting Research Center, Dr. Akashi was a senior researcher of human factors at the lighting      research laboratory of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. He is currently a registered architect licensed by Japan's      Minister of Construction.

        Professional memberships:
       Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, The Society for Psychophysiological Research, International      Dark-Sky Association, The Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan, Japanese National Committee of CIE.

        Awards:
       Noteworthy Invention 1998, awarded by Japan's Minister of State for Science and Technology; Research      Encouragement Award 1995, awarded by the Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan.
