About the Lighting Research Center

The Lighting Research Center (LRC) is    part of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute    of Troy, N.Y., and is the leading    university-based research center    devoted to lighting. The LRC offers the    world's premier graduate education in    lighting, including one- and two-year    master's programs and a Ph.D.    program. Since 1988 the LRC has built    an international reputation as a reliable    source for objective information about    lighting technologies, applications, and    products. The LRC also provides    training programs for government    agencies, utilities, contractors, lighting    designers, and other lighting    professionals. Visit

             Testing Procedures Committee Seeks Members

The Illuminating Engineering Society's Testing Procedures Committee (TPC) is seeking new members, especially from the "consumer" or "general interest" community.

The TPC is looking for experienced members of the lighting community, especially those considered Consumers or General Interest, who are interested in actively participating in committee activity.

The TPC committee is responsible for drafting and maintaining a majority of the Lighting Measurement (LM) guides.

Standing subcommittees focus on Indoor, Outdoor, and Lamp guides.

Current areas of work include:

T5s
LEDs
Induction Lamps
Ultraviolet Luminaires
CCD Photometry
Indoor and Outdoor Luminaires
Field Operating Factors
The committee is responsible for the Lighting Measurement (LM) documents which prescribe how to measure the light output of lamps and luminaires, how this data is reported, and doing field measurements.

There are currently about 45 full and advisory members on the TPC, says Carla Ooyen, TPC Chair.

"Getting involved allows the TPC member to be current with these guidelines as well as influencing changes they feel necessary," says Ooyen. "Many members are from manufacturers, but we'd really like to get more members who fit the consumer or general interest categories who may have a different perspective. This balance of interest is required if we want our documents to be ANSI approved."

The TPC meets twice a year, generally in April and October, at various locations. New members begin at the "advisory" level, and are eligible to become a full member after one year of active service, which means attending most meetings and contributing to document development. Requirements for advisory members are less than full members. Advisory members who can't travel can still offer important input on document development. There is no limit as to how long the member may stay on the committee, as long as their involvement is active.

Most TPC members are also members of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA), but it is not required. A list of TPC members is available on the IESNA Web site. Interested individuals may submit a membership application online at www.iesna.org, or for further information, contact Carla Ooyen, TPC Chair, at (770) 922-9000 or e-mail cooyen@lithonia.com.
